Below you will see a gallery of pictures of the the replacement of the Auxiliary Drive Belt Tensioner on my son's 306 Diesel Estate "S" Reg.
If I was going to rate this repair for difficulty I would give it about 6 out of 10. Lack of tools did not help and learning how it comes off was also a challenge.
None of the Haynes manuals did cover this Tensioner in the book so a little trial and error had to be adopted.
You have to drop the engine mount off the drivers side and lower the engine to allow removal of the large bolt you can see in the first Pic.
I fitted the new drive pulley and bearing only and decided to reuse the old spring. The drive pulley was approx £100 and he tension spring was a further £60
I also had the extra problem that the roller bearing collapsed in the old pulley, this forced the drive belt to shred and find its way under the cam belt cover.
This caused the cam belt to jump 1 -2 teeth and place the timing out on the car. Luckily when i reset the timing bolts and refitted the cam timing belt the engine ran fine with no problems.
Luckily i got away with the piston and valve collision. ( Lucky !!!)
